Must-have Apps for The Performing Musician
With the invention of the smartphone, technology is in our hands, literally, and in this day and age, we can find vast amounts of useful apps for everyone, for any purpose.
So, how can a smartphone be beneficial to the performing musician?
Here we have gathered the three Best Metronome, Tuner, and Voice recording Apps on the market compatible with iPhones and iPads.
Each one convenient, cost-effective and easy-to-use. Enjoy!
1. The Tuner App
This chromatic tuner and tone generating app allow you to tune your instrument with accuracy and speed. It offers a variety of pitch and temperament settings and provides a large clear display that is easy to see from a distance. One of the apps best features is that it provides a variety of different temperament settings for the user. Cleartune is simple and user-friendly, and yet very efficient and accurate.

Made by the famous Peterson Strobe Tuners, this app is slightly more expensive to download. However, with its vast amount of features, we can see why. iStroboSoft is sensitive to a wide range of pitches (for example the whole range of a harp) and includes an input boost and a noise filter. The noise filter is truly the selling point here, as it reacts only to you and not the other orchestral musicians surrounding you.

This all-in-one app is a tuner, a tone generator, and a metronome, brilliant!
TonalEnergy is highly pitching sensitive, enables recording while using the tuner or the metronome, offers a temperament setting as well as some other features such as notation options, Bluetooth support and more. However, what we love about TonalEnergy has to be the option it provides for selecting one particular sound from a large variety of high-quality multi-sampled instrument sounds for symphonic instruments. Brilliant!

2. The Metronome App
The Pro Metronome app supports several ways to experience beats. The free version includes sound, and the Pro version enables Visual, Flash, Vibrate and Airplay Modes. Pro metronome supports a host of secondary features such as background play mode, in-app volume adjust and the ability to save playlists you can share with friends. However, the highlight of this App’s has to be the Polyrhythms feature, in which allows you to stack two rhythm tracks on top of one other.

The Newzik metronome offers a large variety of sound sets, flexible setting of meters, and also a visible metronome that you can be displayed with or without sound. Newzik is above all a sheet music reader, yet one of its strong features is the ability to combine the metronome with your score (PDF or MusicXML). In other words, everything you need in one app!

The Metronome+ app offers 4 new modes that allow you to record, play pitches, create a setlist with custom settings. What we truly like here is the option of programming the app to increase the tempo and track repetition of difficult passages. Metronome+ is a simple, accurate, elegant and easy-to-use metronome app with a beautifully uncluttered interface.
3. The Audio Recorder
The built-in Voice Memos app is totally free and lets you record any audio you want to save, to your iPhone. The great thing about this app is that you can internally edit and share these memos with whomever you wish.
“The voice memos app is so handy, and it actually gives you a very, very good quality recording. It’s good for when you want to get a little bit of feedback.” Bjorn Ranheim, Cellist, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
